True Stachybotrys testing is narrower than a normal mold check. A dark patch on joists in a Powderhorn basement or behind a wet bathroom wall in Northeast may be Stachybotrys chartarum, but it may be Cladosporium or Aspergillus. You cannot confirm the species by color, smell, or a phone photo.

We start with a free inspection, then price testing only if it will help you make a decision. Samples go to an independent lab, with results in 48-72 hours. Each sample has a lab cost, so we explain how many make sense before we take them.

Black-colored growth is not the same as Stachybotrys

Stachybotrys chartarum is the mold most people mean when they say true black mold. It likes wet cellulose. In a Minneapolis house, that often means drywall paper, ceiling tile, fiberboard, cardboard, or dust on old wood that stayed wet after a leak.

Color alone is a poor test. Cladosporium can look black on window sash, painted trim, and damp basement corners. Aspergillus can look dark on framing, contents, and settled dust. Those molds can still bother allergies and asthma, but they are not the same species.

Species matters because Stachybotrys can produce mycotoxins under the right growth conditions. That does not mean every dark spot is a toxin problem. It means we need lab ID before we use the Stachybotrys name in a report, a real-estate file, or an insurance letter.

When Stachybotrys testing is worth paying for

Testing makes sense when the answer will change the next step. If someone in the home has strong symptoms that line up with damp building exposure, lab data can help separate Stachybotrys from common allergen molds. We see this in finished basements with old water lines, behind vinyl wallpaper, and near rim joists that stayed wet through spring thaw.

It can also help during a home sale. A buyer may see black growth in a 1920s South Minneapolis basement and ask for proof of what it is. Sellers may need a clean report after removal. Insurance adjusters may ask for sample results after an ice dam, supply line break, or sewer backup.

If the material is wet, moldy drywall that must be removed either way, testing may not save money. We will say that during the free inspection.

How we collect samples and what each sample costs

We use three sample types for Stachybotrys chartarum. Air samples use a spore trap cassette to pull a set amount of air from the room. We also take an outdoor control sample so the lab can compare indoor spores to the air outside that day.

Surface samples use a tape lift from the dark growth. This is often the best choice when there is visible mold on drywall paper, a basement beam, or the back of base trim. Bulk samples are small pieces of material, like a cut section of drywall or ceiling tile, sent to the lab for direct review.

Our inspection is free. Lab testing is $125 per sample on most Minneapolis jobs. A small Stachybotrys check is often 2 to 4 samples, and the independent lab sends results in 48-72 hours.

FAQ

Common questions, straight answers

Can you tell if black spots in my Minneapolis basement are Stachybotrys by looking at them?+

No. Black-looking growth on block walls, joists, or old painted trim may be Cladosporium, Aspergillus, or Stachybotrys chartarum. We need a lab sample, often a tape lift from the growth, to name the species.

How much does Stachybotrys black mold testing in Minneapolis cost?+

The inspection is free. Lab samples are $125 per sample on most jobs, and many homes need 2 to 4 samples. We tell you the sample count and cost before we collect anything.

Is an air sample enough for true black mold testing?+

Sometimes, but not always. Stachybotrys spores are sticky and may not show well in air unless the area was disturbed. If we see dark growth on drywall paper, ceiling tile, or fiberboard, a tape lift or bulk sample can give a clearer answer.

Will Stachybotrys testing help with a home sale or insurance claim?+

Yes, if the other party needs proof of the mold type or proof after cleanup. We see this after ice dam leaks near Lake Nokomis, basement water events in older homes, and buyer inspections that flag black growth. The lab report lists the sample location, method, and mold ID.
